Quiet nights of quiet stars
Quiet chords from my guitar
Floating on the silence that surrounds us

Quiet thoughts and quiet dreams
Quiet walks by quiet streams
And a window looking on the mountains and the sea, oh how lovely

This is where I want to be
Here with you so close to me
Until the final flicker of life's ember

I who was lost and lonely
Believing life was only
A bitter tragic joke, have found with you, the meaning of existence, oh my love

I who was lost and lonely
Believing life was only
A bitter tragic joke, have found with you, the meaning of existence, oh my love

Gorgeous stuff.
Anything that sounds like Portuguese gets 10 from me

Yes, I agree, RIP!  Exceptional voice!
RIP Astrud Gilberto. Your voice melts me every time.
Little bit like Till Brönner.
Goosebumps poor!
One of the most important  representation of the Truly Brazilian Music.  Joao Gilberto along with many others, Luiz Bonfá, Antônio Carlos Jobin, are trailblazers of MPB.
Seems to be an error in the English lyrics as she definitely mentions a window looking out on Corcovado and not 'the mountains and the sea'.

Cool story. Thank You for sharing it.

I'm so glad Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones(and so on) did not have the same thoughts about the sax.

You've got to be trolling.

Thank you for sharing your ignorance

The RP audience rates it 7.7 - your rating would be somewhat lower
BTW your handle [baddog8it] is delightfully descriptive [dogshit?].

Sax solo gives it an automatic 'sucko-barfo'.
If anyone ever asks you for an example of a "warm" recording, direct their attention to this gem.  Superb.
The definition of mellow and oh, so cool!
If  I could rate this 100 I would!
SUPERB!!  Thanx RP!
Fabulous song, and fantastic memories! The ex- and I used to love the Brazilian Music Show on Sundays on the radio here in Boulder '92-'93, and we continued the weekly tradition while we lived in the coastal wilds of Ishikawa '93-2000; Jobim's gems and the pantheon of Brazilian jazz gods.  Muito bem, RP!
The lyrics are missing the parts in Portuguese:

Um cantinho,um violão
Este amor, uma canção
Pra fazer feliz a quem se amar
Muita calma pra pensar
E ter tempo pra sonhar
Da janela vê-se o corcovado
O redentor, que lindo
Quero a vida sempre assim
Com voçê perto de mim
Até o apagar da velha chama
E eu que era triste
Descrente deste mundo
Ao encontrar voçê e conheci
O que é felicidade meu amor.

O que é felicidade, o que é felicidade
'Everything but the girl' did a nice version of this tune. Worth checking it out.

Great set. From Take Five to this masterpiece. Takes me back to being 11 or 12, watching my folks have a mellow night (scotch, wine) and spin their favorite "cool jazz" records. Throw in some Gerry Mulligan and you've got it nailed. Those weren't the best of days, but they are sweet memories.

Different circumstances for me, though same feeling I get hearing this one, and it's 4:41pm so I'll pour a Scotch in a bit, queue up the Getz/Gilberto album and try to recreate some of your old memories.  Long Live RP and Bossa Nova!!
That is dreamy

every so lovely
Very nice songs, all these Jobim pieces. Although... the appeal of Astrud Gilberto's voice has always escaped me. So shallow, so inexpressive, so boring... I guess more than her quality as a singer it's the memory of a truely golden age of music.
I see Claudia Cardinale.....
Oh' how lovely.. :)
I can't fully explain it, but I enjoy posts like that. Cheers. Buzzardcheater wrote:

simply a masterpiece.
This song is a perfect example of why I adore RP. Never heard of the artist or song (gasp!) but absolutely love it.
Mellowzzzzz
Astrud and Antonio
Absolutely, perfectly lovely. Like a soft breeze on bare skin.
Oh, so very good. I just luv it so much I wanna hear Aguas De Marco, Andorinha & Stone Flower

Stan the Man.
Tom Jobim was a master, he created Bossa Nova.
Yeah, always a fave. That purring Portuguese, that oddly-syncopated Brazilian sound, that hauntingly happy music, so evocative of a bygone era -- but as always, timeless whenever heard. More of this, of Joa and Astrud, too, anytime, please, Bill!
DAMNIT! Just missed another fave while doing something else and had the volume turned down. I love bossa nova. Thankfully I have Astrud Gilberto's CD in my car.I'll probably add this one.
Amost so good that it made me forget that it's -20C outside, and that we just had 70cm of snow. Almost.

Aaah. I love this stuff, even tho it may be a bit cliche (think: Girl from Ipanema). But the combination of Gilberto's guitar and smooth voice and the incredible sound of Paul Desmond's sax.......good stuff. I grew up listening to this album, my folks being ensnared by the late 50's Bossanova craze.
The irony of this post is that "Corcovado" is from the same album, Getz/Gilberto, that is "Girl From Ipanema". And it's Stan Getz's sax. Jobim plays piano and Joao Gilberto guitar. I also grew up with this stuff--from the early '60s actually--courtesy of my father's enthusiasm before it was overtaken by Beatlemania. I still have his Verve mono LPs.

wonderfull ... i lived 9 years in Brazil .. i miss that place
Try the version on The Essential Stan Getz. I think it's better. But this one still gets an 8.
This not only makes me sway in my seat as I listen, but it entices my soul to sway also....
One of my favorite songs, but not digging Antonio's voice on it.
heaven...
Very nice. Would be perfect for a springtime Sunday morning with the paper and a good cup of coffee.
Yes, well, we never were much for subtle virtuosity, were we? physicsgenius wrote:
It would probably be unfair of me to rate this down, since I could only hear about 1 note in 3 over the sound of my yawns.
Outstanding.
I needed to hear this tonight and I didn't even know it. And I've never heard it before either. I hear odd echoes of Donald Fagen's "New Frontier" ... which, I assume, probably came out long after this did.
Thanks for a great song to go with my morning cup of tea. Still waking up over here.
Is this RP's jazz hour? The last two tracks got a 2, this is a 1 - looks like RP's on a bad run right now from my viewpoint :(
oh, to be on a brazilian beach...
Lovely for late-night working in my pjs (3:00 am in SC)

I love Astrud Gilberto
Soothing
So sexxxy!
Is that Astrud Gilberto singing with him? Love her voice, whoever it is. Great tune!
I know this song from the AIDS benefit compilation, Red Hot + Rio. This version is quite a bit mellower.
smoove...
Cool choice, diggin it
I think this is the wrong album. It should be Getz/Gilberto featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim. It's the same album that has Girl from Ipanema. I listened to it daily for many years. Here it is: (click here)
Aww yeah! Thanks for this -- Jobim is magnificent. Check out Wave; the entire album is classic.
Brazilian music instantly transforms me to a hammock under a tree with a mojito in my hand.
Jobim!
I love the style, but his voice has a nerdy tone!
Damnit, where's my cocktail!
And let's not forget the fabulous female vocalist Astrud Gilberto. Thanks for the bossa, Bill.

That's funny. I grew up listening to this album and a lot of other Jobim stuff, especially his collaberations with Stan Getz (sp?). My parents also loved these albums, and I remember this cut in particular.
Girl from Ipanema...one of my ALL TIME favorites!!
Sooo relax 8) Jobim has a unique style. The total absence of stress in his voice makes you feel yourself free of stress. I like it !
Au encontrar voce eu cogneci o que felicidade e meu amor... After I found you, I finally knew what happyness is..
nice calming tune
Thank you for playing Brazilian music...It is not Jobim's fault that our parents have played this music over and over..Thank you agagin...

Jobim is one of the great songwriters on the 20th century, a master of the sublime. Bossa Nova may have been a craze in the 60's, but it is still very much alive, and has had a tremendous influence that still ripples through contemporary music.

My Wife is from Brasil, I have fallen in love with bosanova - can you not just close your eyes and dream... More!
