Well, I want somebody tell me, answer if you can!
'Want somebody tell me, just what is the soul of a man?

I'm going to ask the question, answer if you can
If anybody surely can tell me, what is the soul of a man?

Well, I want somebody tell me, answer if you can!
I Want somebody tell me, just what is the soul of a man?

I've traveled in different countries, I've traveled in foreign lands
I've found nobody could tell me, just what about the soul of a man

Well, I want somebody tell me, answer if you can!
I Want somebody tell me, just what is the soul of a man?

I saw a crowd stand talking, I came up in time
Were teaching the lawyers, the doctors, that a man ain't nothing but his mind

Well, I want somebody tell me, answer if you can!
I Want somebody tell me, just what is the soul of a man?

I reads the bible often, I tries to read it right
As far as I could understand, a man is more than his mind

God, I want somebody tell me, answer if you can!
I Want somebody tell me, just what is the soul of a man?

When Christ stood in the temple, the people all stood amazed
Was teaching the lawyers and the doctors, how to raise a body from the grave

Well, I want somebody tell me, answer if you can!
'Want somebody tell me, just what is the soul of a man?

Whichever version, the lyrics are mind-bliwing
It's good.   I like the Bruce Cockburn version better.  To each his/her own.
Nice
Another one of those songs I have and have no idea where it came from.  Half of my library is that way. Lots of songs find me and for the life of me I have them but have never heard of the song or the artist half the time.{#Lol}

This whole CD is fantastic. Definitely recommend it.

Soulful and bluesy, clothed in the cadence of a hundred-year-old spiritual.  Much likey.
Brilliantly arranged and it builds terrifically.

No No No. It's when they shut down the interstates and hand them over to all the bicyclists in Portland! What a sunday morning, even if my seat is a bit sore.
Been there, bruised that.

Pretty soulful and nicely arranged ... a new artist to me ... thanks RP! {#Sunny}

Oh Lordy yes.
I love Ollabelle...the new album is great, too. Would be good to hear some cuts from it.
This rendition makes for a fairly non-objectionable song... But Bruce's simply whips this version like there's a woodshed involved.

I just saw them perform in Woodstock. Not overly impressed. They were a good backup for Phoebe Snow and Donald Fagan that night though.
The Cockburn version is still one of my personal top 50 and makes it worth to buy the CD
BerrySweet! This is real soulful music.
I like this band. Has anybody had the chance to check out their new CD? I have and it is pretty good!
Not bad... but Bruce makes the song his own.

I much prefer the original Bruce Cockburn version. It doesn't have as much energy as Bruce's version, but it's okay.
I agree! Bruce's version (which is in the RP library also -- YES!!! ) of Blind Willie's song is much more engaging. This is a 5, Bruce's is a 10.
This sounds good. But I saw them in 2004 as part of some big bluegrass extravaganza, and the folks I was with agreed -- not overwhelming live.

And thanks to Paste Magazine for cluing me in Ollaballe--and this song in particular, which was on one of their CD's. Of course, thanks to RP for telling me about Paste. The question is, where does Paste discover all this great music?
I think Paste rules. Aggressive music hunters - that's their job.

A terrific CD.
Ollabelle: Gospel music that kicks Satan's butt!
I like this. Not pushy, but extremely musical and raw. Beautiful slide.
Try the original (relatively speaking) by Blind Willie Johnson - Cockburn is good, but not quite Willie. And Ollabelle is alright, just a little overproduced.

Any guesses who it is singing? Amy Helm -- she's Levon Helm's daughter. Neil

Isn't this a recent entry on a Paste Sampler?
Where does Bill find all this great music??
Has a power all its own, imho.

I'm casting my vote for the Cockburn version. This version is too... easy listening.

Songs like this make me want to weep. The depth and beauty is incredible.
this is pretty flat compared to the other versions that i've heard.
Can't put my finger on it, but something tantaliizing about this. NOt sure if its just the song (thank you, Blind Willie) or Ollabelle. But I like it.

Just to be finicky, Bruce's version isn't the original (although it's REALLY good). He learned it off an old 78 from Blind Willie Johnson.
Thanks for that info! I didn't know this was his song. Though I'm not really that familiar with Blind Willie's music I definitely have heard of him. Thanks again.

I agree that it lacks energy and her voice, while good, seems kind of contrived.
Wow! Thank you RP, there's another artist I never listened to that I'm going to have to check out now.

That was pure gold. Damn, give me more.
