My mother spent 10 years sitting by a window
Scared if she spoke she would die of a heart attack
She listened as her dreams silently screamed
They drowned like little dolphins caught in a fishnet

Dear world i'm pleased to meet you

Hey everybody when you walk the walk
You gotta back it all up you gotta talk the talk
Hey everybody when I hear the knock
Don't wanna measure out my life to the tick of a clock

Hey everybody when my daddy died
He had a sad sad story written in his eyes
Hey everybody when you walk the walk
You cannot measure out your life to the tick of a clock

I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum

Hey everybody
When you walk the walk you gotta back it all up
But can you talk the talk
Hey everybody when I hear the knock
Don't want to measure out my life to the tick of a clock
Hey every Hey everbody

I wanna walk to the beat of my own drums
(Say what?)
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drums
(Say what?)
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drums
(Say what?)
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drums
(Say what?)

I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
I wanna live to the beat of my own drum
I wanna laugh to the beat of my own drum
I wanna hang ten, high, say pleased to meet you
Take to the beat of my own drum
Give to the beat of my own drum
I wanna sing to the beat of my own drum

I wanna fly, (cry), win, (lose), live, (die), take five
Pleased to meet you

My daddy spent 10 years living on the outside looking in
He thought that he would never get back (hey get back)
Watched his dream walk across a silver screen
And he was standing there when the theatre went pitch black

Dear world I'm pleased to meet you

Hey everybody when I walk the walk
I gotta back it all up but can i talk the talk
Hey everybody when I hear the knock
Don't wanna measure out my life to the tick of a clock

Hey everybody (4x) --can you walk the walk?

I wanna walk to the beat of my own drums
(Say what?)
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drums
(Say what?)
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drums
(Say what?)
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drums
(Say what?)

I wanna live (play) to the beat of my own drum
I wanna laugh (sing) to the beat of my own drum
I wanna play (pray) to the beat of my own drum
I wanna hang ten, high, say pleased to meet you

I wanna screw up to the beat of my own drum
I wanna take it out of town and do it to my drum

Scream (shout) Wipe (out), win (loose), wipe (out)
Slumped down on the street making love to my baby
Make love to my baby

Father: It's a wonderful idea, but it doesn't work.

My own drum my own beat

Hey did you ever get the feeling that it's really a joke
You think you've got it figured out and then you find that you don't
So you say goodbye to the world and now you're floating in space
You got no sense of nothing not even a time or a place
Then suddenly you hear it it's the beat of your heart
And for the first time in your life you know your life is about to start

I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum

There's someone knocking in the wall, was it an echo? ba da pa pa

This kind of sound just makes me nervous.
oh....no. It's Poe. What is it about this woman that annoys me so?

I listen to Radio Paradise to avoid hearing dreck like this. It was painful. I actually stopped the stream until it was done.
is this a remix of spice girls-wannabe?

this is a solid 2.
I don't mind this, but the recording seems flat to me

for sure, for sure.
Now, if Metallica were peforming this it might have some real teeth to it.
Too much pomp for my taste... although it does start off rocking well.
Love the beginning of the song, hate the end. Makes me feel very anxious.
did I hear brit in there somewhere?
soooclose 2 spice g's still, a catchy tune except the "make love 2 my baby" c'mon bill...??
I have loved Poe since she broke out will the album Hello. Poe rocks my socks.
I had this playing on my iPod the other night. The dog heard the word "walk" -- dogs have real sensitive hearing, you know -- and there she was, nudging me, going over to where her leash is stowed and coming back again. It's become the dog's official theme song of her favorite activity.

I like the song, and think the album is pretty damn close to perfect. I frankly can't say there's anything that I'd skip over and not unlike the last 4 or 5 Water's Floyd albums, it's pretty much a full blown concept album. There's nothing about it that's like American Idol. Frankly, when I hear it, I frequently think of Pink Floyd. Not because it sounds like Pink Floyd, but because virtually every song segues into the next and like every Floyd album from DSOTM through the Final Cut, it's a full blown concept album. If not for RP, I never would have gotten this album...Love it.
Reminds me of the "Garbage" of old. Me like.

Groovy ending on that.
That's a "poe" excuse for a song if you ask me.
I'm saying 'no' to Poe.
Cheezy, but she has fun with it i suppose

Last time I heard her in a "Pop" fashion, was when "Hello" came out in 1994 or 1995. Definately not pop industry stuff here.
Never heard Poe before, but I likey!

Apparently there were a few issues with the label, they got into it and some clause in her contract kept her from recording/touring for a 7 year period, which should be expired now. She was tracking a new album back in 2006, but I haven't seen any updates in quite some time. Check her Myspace page (don't have the link handy, blocked at work). I love Poe, even this song. This entire album is amazing. Waiting for more... Oh - she did some work with Conjure One (also on RP playlist) a few years ago somehow. Check it out.

Everytime this comes on I re-rate it a 1 just to remind myself how much I don't like this song...

I thought it was Pink. Or the person that won the first American Idol competition. They should consider replacing Linda Perry as the songwriter for that genre. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I LIKE some of Pink's music.
Smoking hot! Jam baby jam.

Taken out of context of the whole album this song does indeed grate if you're not familiar with it. Perhaps there is an assumption that Poe has been experienced sufficiently by all to appreciate this track. If one has heard it in its entirety, then IMHO, you would truly "get" this selection. Brilliant.

I have to agree most of the other comments. That was the worst Poe song I've heard yet and one of the worst on RP. Wonder how it got on the playlist. To top it off, Bill plays Pink Floyd's "Fearless" (an 11.5) next to make matters worse. Rock on Bill.
I like this. I also find it disturbing that so many of my fellow RP listeners are familiar enough with the Spice Girls that they hear them in this. Maybe if my brain was rotted from listening to that I'd hate the world too.
Cut RP some slack. This is supposed to be an eclectic station, so you don't hear the music you like everytime! Welcome to ecclectic.

That was the first time I'd ever heard that song, or heard of Poe. I thought it kicked, and on the strength of it, just purchased it through BMG (was shocked they had it).
stop insulting the spice girls by comparing them to this.
Nobody complained when Sinatra sang "My Way". Well, maybe they complained when David Lee Roth did, but that is another story. I think it's kinda groovy...

I've got that CD and that's the worst song on it - the others are very good though. the CD is a concept CD that's supposed to go along with the book her brother wrote, "House of Leave"..and the CD samples her father, an exinstential playright from Europe. Really interesting family..but yeah, that song is NOT her best work by far.

Yeah, I read the complaints. I like it.
I saw Poe a few years ago and am still laughing about how TERRIBLE she was. Just say "Poe!" and I giggle. Ugh.
I don't get it. I really don't like this. Very pretentious sounding....even if it isn't

Okay, walk the heck off the stage, then, and find a new career.

But I'm open enough to listen to new sounds. That's what I love about RP, for its eclectic diversity of music, which you'll never hear together in one place. Right on! There is only one thing I need to know about music, and Bob Marley said it best: "When it hits you, you feel no pain".

This is really, really, really bad. Maybe the worst song I have ever heard on RP. Sorry.

great song off a great album from a great artist. IMHO, of course. but she rocks and she's going to come back and blow everyone away....so you just wait.

I can't decide on this one; the music is pretty rockin but there is something about the vocals that I just can't get behind. It sounds a little like one of those weenie Christian rock bands or something. There's just a vague whiff of antiseptic to the vocals and the spice girls affected mock-rapping smells a little funny.
Cool! The little kids speaking is a "House of Leaves" reference.

I love House of Leaves with a passion! (Couldn't you tell by my nickname?) Forget about Poe. Her brother is a genius. In the spirit of other postmodern works, House of Leaves
asserts its own fictionality through self reference. Unlike any work of modern fiction, it does so recursively. It's a story within a story within a story--like russian nesting dolls. The labyrinthine subscripts, creative typography, and affective psychological tricks all breathe a beautiful and terrifying life into the book itself. Read it, but don't leave it under your bed. You might not even want to keep on your nightstand. In fact, it may be best if it wasn't in your House altogether. Keep it in your car.
Aw C'mon! This song is a lot of fun!
This song is always a strange experience for me... I guess it's the epitome of a guilty pleasure. I hear your criticisms, and in my honest moments I have to agree. But far more often, this song - every other Poe song I've heard - just gives me a big happy. And yes, House of Leaves is a must read, if you're at all interested in finding out the story behind all the strange little spoken word bits on Haunted.

A strange brew of rap, folk, and funk. Somehow, I can't help but like it.
Keep walking. And listen to the beat of your own drum, as long as we don't have to hear it. I give it a 10.

Yeah. I thought it sounded like them, covered with everything-but-the-kitchen- sink production techniques. Way too much style and not enough substance.

I had the same reaction. Wow, this rocks. Later - uh, this stuff at the end is just bad. I'm crazy about Poe and this CD but the last third or so of this song is way over the top. Yep, overdone describes it well.

Yes, but I thought her first cd was the best.
She's anything but pretentious when you meet her...an engaging and endearing personality...
I don't think I can listen to this song without doing some mad finger-drumming on my desk. Some people chair-dance...I finger-drum. I do like the song, but can understand how some people might not.
