Sometimes when I open my eyes
I see the things that I can't hide
Emptiness hanging from the shadows on the wall
Sometimes when I open my ears
Hear all the things I don't want to hear
4AM, faith is lost, she's screaming out again
And I say Mary, Mary
Mother full of light
When you gonna come down
And save us
Save us from this night
Oh, I say Mary, Mary
When you gonna hear
When you gonna come down
And take away
This bucket full
This bucket full of tears?
I tried to compromise
Saw the world through other's eyes
In the end, the battle came and left me on the ground
So many ways to fall
We seem to find them all
Tripping through the rubble as we fight within ourselves
And I say Mary, Mary
Mother full of light
When you gonna come down
And save us
Save us from this night
Oh, I say Mary, Mary
When you gonna hear
When you gonna come down
And take away
This bucket full
This bucket full of tears?
Impossible, impossible
Are the things that we make implausible
Implausible, implausible
Are the things that become impossible
We risk it all
We pay the toll
To a place that we've never been before
I won't be going back now
Mary, Mary
When you gonna fly
When you gonna come down
And say the words
To hush this endless cry
Oh, I say Mary, Mary
When you gonna hear
When you gonna come down
And take away
This bucket full
This bucket full of tears?
Oh, Mary
This bucket full
Of tears
I see the things that I can't hide

Blah doesn't quite capture just how bothersome that vocal is. Dead on with the failed McLachlan thought. Really painful.

Anyone else reminded of "Dear God" by XTC? Similar melody lines.
I have seen this girl perform live at Cafe Vivaldi's listening room in NYC> she was such an inspiration. Angelic vocals and excellent songwriting... turns out she's a nice person too.

This tune reminds me a little of an amazing song by the obscure band Fleming & John called "Comfortable", which incidentally is among my favorite songs ever. I wonder if there's an influence either way.

Unfortunately, you are quite correct that the history of Christianity is studded with individuals who do and say horrible things in Christ's name, or conversely, fail to follow that whole "love thy neighbor" thing. In the present day, some of those individuals happen to also be the loudest and most obnoxious to claim the mantle of Christianity, and as such, they give entire denominations a bad name.
I think there are more than a few Christians who are inspired by this "mumbo jumbo" to do good in the world, whether that is bringing food and medicine to the most needy, advocating sound environmental policy (I've generally seen this referred to as Caring for Creation), or peace (Quakers, among many others).
That all said, there are entire arenas of public discourse, in particular the sciences and public policy, where faith should have no place in decision-making. I suspect such attempted theocratic methods are what make you see Christianity (I note you don't mention other religions... may I ask why?) as a dangerous meme.
Finally, in the US at least, it's about freedom *of* religion (worship whatever you want, or not at all), not freedom *from* religion. I think a healthy faith life can be full integrated with a rational worldview.
beware the deceiver...if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice..sound familiar ?anniebear wrote:

Yes folks, intolerance, ignorance, and disrespect does exist at all poles, across all demographic divides. Nice generous helping of broad generalization here to boot!

If I may insert my 2 cents here, I'm not reading the quotation marks as sarcasm, if she uses it the way I would, I think she is referring to the Church as a political entity and Mary as the character that has been created by that political entity. I'm assuming that she is saying that what we have come to know as Mary is not historically accurate, or what the political organization says is not in line with her spiritual views. Basically, separating the idealogy from the entity for the purpose of looking at the issue historically. I don't think she's belittling anyone. Just my observation.

But that's not really for you to say, is it? And God has always used the human hand, such as in His many dealings with Israel in biblical times.
I didn't say it. Please read the Biblical quote from Revelation and you'll see that God said it. You might like to compare it with Ezequiel chap 38, especially Ez 38:4, 10 bis. God said this also.
By the way, there are almost countless examples of God using angelic hands rather than human hands when excercising judgement. In fact even in what you call Biblical times, He made a point of giving victory not by human hand by making sure the odds were completely against victory by force of numbers in all battles fought by Israel.

Truth is that God slumbers since the time of Creation. Jehovah was the Archai who oversaw the evolution of ancient Hebrew consciousness & the Christ event made obsolete those ancient laws. Death is no more a justification for further human development. Cut the crap, Texas....

In ages past this held true. Since the line was drawn in the sand there has been zero justification.

I hesitate to get into this, but I think the point is being missed here. I don't think she is making religious claims about being saved and whatnot. i think she is speaking allegorically and artistically, not to mention feministically. Mary is a mother figure. I think she is feeling frustrated with the world and the state of affairs today and sometimes when one feels vulnerable like that, a mother is comforting. Maybe she's saying that the world needs it's proverbial mommy because we're getting out of hand. Or, looking at it a different way, maybe Mary is just the same of someone she knows who's passed and she's calling to her for guidance.
