Oh, you never learned the 'Whens' and 'Wheres' and 'Whys'
And I still believe that you were dying to be everything
To everyone and for all time
Ah, the golden boy did you stop trying?
Did it turn out stale, or did it simply lose its wonder?
Could you hold it up from out and under?
Does the distance seem to dim-dumb-dim your memory?
Does the distance seem to fell the hunger?
So, you're left with your thoughts and where do you go
Out the window or an open door
And once you believed they could keep you awake
It's so deceiving
So, you talk to yourself and what do you know
You answer back with a, "Don't say so"
And once you believed you had something to say
It's so deceiving
So, you never learned the way to hold a crowd
And it turns out now that you were dying to be everything
To everyone and for all time
Ah, the golden boy did you stop trying?
So you're left with your thoughts and where do you go
Out the window or an open door

This CD is one of my desert island albums. Never get tired of it! This song in particular is one of my sing in the car at the top of my lungs and don't care who hears me!
Lived in NC during the 80's and early 90's, UNC grad. I moved to Indiana in '92 and was shocked when, at a local music venue, spied a Connells hat. I wasn't aware that the "southern music trail" (tobacco road through Atlanta) also had an arm that reached up to Bloomington, IN. Love the early stuff, they petered out around "Ring".
The Connells ... Raleigh represent !!!!
There was a time ... The Connells, Arrogance, The Fabulous Knobs, The Snap, X-Teens, PKM, Corrosion Of Conformity ...
Spreading a little further out; Treva Spontaine (Greensboro, NC), Let's Active (Winston Salem, NC), REM, Guadalcanal Diary, The Swimming Pool Q's (Athens, Atlanta, GA). GA included because these bands had noteworthy albums produced by Don Dixon (Arrogance) and Mitch Easter (Let's Active) and played here quite a lot back in the day.
From around 1978 until around 1986 was a musical Golden Age in North Carolina.
"Slack Jawed" that you would play the Connells--well played sir!
"Up All Night"
Anything by the Connells is a 10 in my book. Wow--pretty obscure! Thanks!
Just caught part of this, but I liked it!

Wow, I really LOVE this song - had never heard it before! (Well, in 1989 I was working full-time so didn't listen to music much.) I definitely need to put this CD on my list of music to buy when next I have disposable income.

Cool...Never heard these guys when this came out, I guess, or never knew it if I did...just now, it made me wanna hear The Spin Doctors!
This is so much a better version of all the crap I heard in the 80"s,like it but I do hope if I had a girlfriend she was only wearing one pair of socks?
This sounds much like the Shoes from the early 80's.

ah, fun and games...
A hometown favorite here in Raleigh. Been listening to them since the late 80's, and they are STILL kicking around - just saw them downtown not long ago. A great band that should have made it even bigger in the US. Bill, more Connells!
Here's a blast from the past!

I can't believe there are only 3 Connells songs ever played on RP...
What about "Get a Gun", "Stone Cold Yesterday", and "Fun and Games"? (just a few that I can think of off the top of my head)
Good to hear them again... I should get my old cassettes out of storage.

Love it!
Damn. I'd forgotten about these guys. Used to see them a bunch back in the 80s around the Charlotte, NC clubs. Quite the flashback.
Love these guys! Thanks for the flashback. Ah, college life.....
Whoa. Time warp. Haven't heard these guys in a while! Thanks Bill!

Where was I when this came out??? Happy to read they were regionally successful - that must explain it. This is great!

It's a shame.
For sure.
Not for lack of trying on my part.

My gods, these guys sound so much like Blue Peter, another "regional" band who were big in Toronto during the 80's.

Excellent band back in the day. "Fun and Games" off of this CD is marvellous.
thought they were regional too and just another example of RP's musical omniscience (i really hope i spelled that correctly)

Ahh, the Connells. I love their early stuff. As a matter of fact, I tried to upload a song or two of theirs on the LRC a few months back, but got shot down.
I never knew that they were as popular as they were. Since they're from NC, and I'm in SC, I thought they were just a regional band (like Jump Little Children, Cravin Melon, or Drivin N Cryin). I never knew they had much of a following outside of the Carolinas.

It's amazing how many people are delighted to find the Connells in my CD rack. Another fan!
(Not Connells CDs. Actual Connells. Tight squeeze.)
My coworker just came over and yelled "who's playing the Connells?" She was ever so excited and said that it was a very important album at a particular time in her life. She was amazed that it was being played. Right on, Radio Paradise!

OK, here's my "me too" post... College! Yay! Now I have to go dig out my Connells albums... er, tapes... from the basement... somewhere...

There\'s really nothing compelling about this tune at all. It\'s not that it\'s bad, per say, it\'s just not particularly good either.
Ahh, college days! Great song from a great album by a great band. All in all, pretty great.
Oh, man, if I wasn't at the office right now, I'd be singing along at the top of my lungs to this still-very-likable song from my college years. Thanks for playing this.
Always liked this song.
Hmmm...just not diggin it. 5 of 10
Can't say I'm getting much from this. Sounds like a college band, with low production quality.

It does help when you turn it up! Initially didn't care for it but decided to give it a screamin chance. A 7.
I think I know now. His voice has actual hope. The tone, how he holds a note, all of it.
9. Must have something to say...
Wow, talk about a blast from the past. Wow. :D
More Connells! Please.
I like the Connells plenty, I can't even say why, such a pure sound.
God I used to love this song and CD. The Connells rocked. A great band to love while in college. More Connells please - Fifth Fret is awesome.

Great to see this band show up on RP! They were such an underrated alt-rock band on indie radio! Love it!
