Yeah, all those stars drip down like butter
And promises are sweet
We hold out our pans with our hands to catch them
We eat them up, drink them up, up, up, up

Hey, let me in
Hey, let me in

I only wish that I could hear you whisper down
Mister fisherman, to a less peculiar ground
He gathered up his loved ones and he brought them all around
To say goodbye, nice try

Hey, let me in
Yeah yeah yeah
Hey, let me in, let me in

I had a mind to try to stop you
Let me in, let me in
Well, I got tar on my feet and I can't see all the birds
Look down and laugh at me
Clumsy, crawling out of my skin

Hey, let me in
Yeah yeah yeah
Hey, let me in

Hey, let me in
Yeah yeah yeah
Hey, let me in

This is the worst singing I've ever heard from Michael Stipe.  Hit a note, man!
Give me the original version (from "Monster") anytime...
This is great! The original is great too, but I love this take on it.

I recall it being about Kurt Cobain. Excellent version!
Yes, Stipe and Cobain had become friends just before KC's suicide. Mike Mills plays electric guitar on this, Kur(d)t's "lefty". A great version, not as bleak/dark as Monster, and all the more frustrating as this isn't commercially available...

I shudder anticipating the answer, but I ask nonetheless and give the benefit of the doubt - what, exactly, do Stipe's age and sexuality have to do with the song?
I am curious as well. I don't particularly like this song, but I like a lot of Michael Stipe's vocal stylings, I rarely even consider his sexuality and/or age.

Will someone let the guy in already so he'll STFU?
Beat me to it, you can come in if you'll just promise to SHUT UP!!!!

That's cool though because " X is the new Y" is the new "Far out, man!" (or the new "Think outside the box," if you prefer) This isn't as good as the album version but it's still a good song despite Stipe's sexual preferences and age... TJ

Indeed! Michael Stipe.... Drunk at 4AM
Will someone let the guy in already so he'll STFU?
But REM is just such a favorite.

Not bigoted just speaking my mind. Just like clowns freak me out too. Nothing against the clown lifestyle.

praying this will be a short song. How many times can he re-work the phrase "let me in". Rock stars don't age well...

This is oddly better than the album version (though I'm still digging on the Monster).
Great song!

I thought I remember reading somewhere that this song is about River Phoenix and/or Kurt Cobain... anyone else heard that?

I never liked this song until I heard this version :-) I really love this.
REM is over. Not whiny is the new whiny.
Cool version of this song. I actually have the 2001 single, I need to get it out again.
