The painter stood before her work
She looked around everywhere
She saw the pictures and she painted them
She picked the colors from the air

Green to green, red to red
Yellow to yellow in the light
Black to black when the evening comes
Blue to blue in the night

It's a long road behind me
It's a long road ahead
If you follow every dream you might get lost
If you follow every dream you might get lost

She towed the line, she held her end up
She did the work of two men
But in the end
She fell down before she got up again

I keep my friends eternally
We leave our tracks in the sound
Some of them are with me now
Some of them can't be found

It's a long road behind me
And I miss you now
If you follow every dream you might get lost
If you follow every dream you might get lost

Green to green, red to red
Yellow to yellow in the light
Black to black when the evening comes
Blue to blue through the night

I like Neil, but this sounds like air pudding. Not much too it... A 3 is generous, I'll probably downgrade it more as time goes on...

Neil is a treasure, his voice belongs to angels...and his heart to the earth and wind.
Neil has a way of calming me down... All is well...
Received the cd for Christmas. This song, to me, is the best cut from a disappointing release.
Lovely. Absolutely beautiful.

Sounds good! New Neil!! Not really different, but good nonetheless.
I agree, and I really admire the fact that he could call it quits, especially with his recent health problems. Still, as much as I like Prairie Winds I'm ready for him to plug in and jam with Crazy Horse again.
Ditto. No intention of offending NY fans - I just have never cared for anything he has ever done. His voice is one of those that makes me think I should pursue a singing career, since I can't imagine mine being any worse. That being said, I like Elvis Costello but I know he gets some negative marks for his voice. Add to that list Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and few others. I guess you will find opinions that are all over the map when it comes to these kinda folks. Patti wrote:
Neil has never been my cup of tea, but that doesn't mean he can't be yours! Alot of people post that certain songs remind them of Muzak, well Neil reminds me of 45's playing at 33 1/3 rpm. :) pbm
Great song. I might just have to buy this album.
According to some interviews with Neil, this song is about his daughter Amber. Who just happens to be a painter. Neil has also commented this is an "empty-nester" song.
Neil is da man! This is a good song from a strong album. I picked up the 2-disc, CD+DVD deluxe version of this from CD Universe. The DVD is a DVD-V (not DVD-A) that contains a 96/24(stereo only) version of the album (as well as a 48/24 w/ video version) that sounds amazing. A typically great-sounding, warm, analogue recording from NY.
