Find yourself a girl and settle down
Live a simple life in a quiet town

Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
So steady as she goes

Your friends have shown a kink in the single life
You've had too much to think, now you need a wife

Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Well, here we go again
You've found yourself a friend that knows you well
But no matter what you do
You'll always feel as though you tripped and fell
So steady as she goes

When you have completed what you thought you had to do
And your blood's depleted to the point of stable glue
Then you'll get along
Then I'll get along

Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Well, here we go again
You've found yourself a friend that knows you well
But no matter what you do
You'll always feel as though you tripped and fell
So steady as she goes
Steady as she goes

Settle for a world, neither up or down
Sell it to the crowd that is gathered round
Settle for a girl, neither up or down
Sell it to the crowd that is gathered round

So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)

Steady as she goes, are you steady now?
Steady as she goes, are you steady now?
Steady as she goes, are you steady now?
Steady as she goes, are you steady now?
Steady as she goes

Is she really going out with him? By Joe Jackson
Pretty hilarious lyrics with a biting edge to their basic truth:
When you have completed what you thought you had to do
And your blood's depleted to the point of stable glue
Then you'll get along

This brings back memories of dark days in 2007 listening to XM Radio, with no variety.  I think this song was on four times a day and I quickly got tired of it, like most other stuff on satellite radio.  No variety and I ended up canceling.  In a couple of years I found Radio Paradise.  Massive, massive variety, and I rediscovered my love for music.  Thank you Bill!
chaque choses que touche Jack White se transforme en or massif ....
everything Jack White touche is changed in golden bars...

These guys absolutely tore up Ryman Auditorium in Nashville when I saw them there in 2019. One of the best rock shows I've been to in years!

Steady as you vote!  (10!)
Saw them in concert last summer. They gave away their new CD. Which is pretty good.

My ears could not hold up to the Venue and I forgot ear plugs.  So I did not enjoy the concert as much as the new album.

Submitted a good song from the new album and it did not make the cut.
Austin City Limits just aired a new show by the Raconteurs well worth the watch.  They ended it with a new and creative version of this song.

Fun tune.
saw them two weeks agin in Toronto......outstanding .

Tom Waits stole Jack's watch. It's funny.
this is the second song I heard and I think you have awesome collection of songs I never heard before thanks

I've had this on my iTunes list for years, but just made the connection to Jack White.  Great song, Jack!
Thank you Bill

Is this song really over a decade old?
I saw a really killer live version of this on a concert film from Montreux. Watch if you can find it - whole show was rockin'!
Joe Jackson hook: Is she really going out with him?
great hook and groove

A brilliant rock band - as good as any - ever.  yes that's a bold statement, but Jack White is a brilliant artist and an amazing songwriter and guitarist - HOWEVER - to these ears, he works better within a group setting - for his Jack-White-ness to have more room to disperse amongst four, I guess.  His uniqueness is sometimes his shortcoming - balanced with the playing and input of others it truly shines.
SPECIAL!
the rhythm section intro is reminiscent of Joe Jackson's "Is She Really Going Out with Him?".

Well, Semisonic (briefly called Pleasure) was made up of half of Trip Shakespeare.  They were half as good as Trip Shakespeare, too.

I have yet to hear anything that Jack's been involved with which is very good. All marginal at best. He's had 1 fairly decent song (We're Going to be Friends). The rest is crap

Can't go wrong with this kind of thing! Jack White is one of the best and most exciting dudes to pick up a guitar in a long, long while, and I love how he is slowly but surely becoming an ongoing influence I appreciate more and more, even though I also still cherish the memories of the raw power and playfulness I found in him (and myself upon hearing & seeing it) in his early stuff...Steady As She Goes, Jack! and right on, RP! I also always thought that Little Hurricane has shades of this tasty styling under the hood, which is a good thing.

I thought this was an even more irritating song by OK GO.

I will always love this song.
The opening (lone bass comping the root chords followed by a guitar doing the same) is eerily similar to Don Dixon's "Praying Mantis." I haven't sat down with me axe to actually compare the chords. 'Twould be interesting.

No all of us listen to American FM (I can't even if I wanted to) and I quite like this. It seems like a nice little pop song and I for one don't think any the lees of band (or Bill for that matter) for playing pop.

I agree. I think that Jack White would sound better with a more dynamic drummer but it is sort of like Neil Young having Crazy Horse for his band. The Crazy Horse rhythm section is pretty poor also. Flame me! P.S. I like this song and this album a lot plus they have a really good drummer.

But sufficent for what The White Stripes are.  Besides, it's pretty apparent that Meg's presence onstage fuels Jack's performance, a significant contribution on its own.

Just saw the documentary "It Might Get Loud" with Jack White, Jimmy Page and the Edge.  Good stuff.  Appreciate Jack White more now.
Their latest album is so much better. This is good but it is sorta like they are just feeling each other out on this one. The second album clearly shows them as a unit, more cohesive. Plus, the songs are just better, more rockin in that White Stripes way but more sophisticated and layered.

I don't get it - is it not okay for rockers to be intelligent or to use big words? That's not unlike the sentiment of voters who select their elected officials on the basis of whom they'd prefer as a drinking buddy.

Gets better every time. I hear it in bars all the time now, although this has been out there for a WHILE.
I MUCH prefer the acoustic version (even with its screw-up) that iTunes gave away four years back. Allegedly, it was recorded in their garage, but has better sound and more character than this version.

Good summary. Not really bad enough to mute, but basically a whole lotta noise masking a whole lotta nuthin'.
Curiously, this is different from the iTunes version, which I like better and actually sounds better despite that it was supposedly recorded in one take in their basement (or something like that).
For a while I had no idea that this was Jack White. Interesting, I think I prefer this album to the White Stripes. The album is really good, but it is also pretty short (like 39 minutes or something near that).
mrrmt wrote:

Nothing against female drummers because there are several really good ones but Meg is awful. Nice to hear Jack White playing with both a decent drummer and bass player.

I counted 29 :-) I still like it - I'm a big fan of Brendan Benson and this is the most 'Bensonesque' of the Raconteurs stuff to date.
Repetitive, yes, but I still like it.

Not at all....just (almost) apologizing for rating it a 5. I usually pass on giving low scores but the frequency of this song moved me to do so here.
Why I like reading the posts here: I heard this and thought, wow, a white stripes ripoff, but now I know why. A good rocking song.
Nice to hear Jack with a real drummer

Hmm, not long after another Johnny Cash song again.
Jack White gets more ripping sound in a single vicious swipe at that old Sears guitar of his than a lot of folks can do in years of trying. A character, to be sure. Can't wait to see what he does next!
A good track, but sort of a strange follow up to Johnny Cash's Get Rhythm...
First heard The Raconteurs as the Free Download Single of the Week on iTunes earlier this year. As noted below, this song sort of gets into your head and swims around. The band certainly has a good pedigree!

I disagree, there is something different here. They have a great sound with an obvious, but good, nod to 70s rock.

ehh... it's just one of those songs that have only one line that gets stuck in your head for not days, but WEEKS at a time.. and i just can't deal w/ those, thus i turn it down. i don't necessarily dislike the sound as a whole, just the incessantly annoying chorus.

This stuff is "rock" or "power pop." Either way,Jack White and his friends rock out! This album is good stuff.
Awesome sound. my 12 yr old loves it too Must have something hot going.....
Heard this tune while waiting on my sirloin cheeseburger topped with provolone and crab meat. This song made the kitchen help MOVE. :-) Groovy Song.
Not bad. Tired of hearing it, but that isn't a comment on the music, just my tolerance of repetivness. I liked it quite a bit when I first heard it. Still, curious to see if this band has what it takes to stick around. Seems they fit the mold of half a dozen others.
