Every breaking wave on the shore
Tells the next one "there'll be one more"
Every gambler knows when to lose
It's what you're really there for
Someone else fears
Now I'm speaking to an answerphone
Like every fallen leaf on the breeze
Winter wouldn't leave it alone, alone

[Chorus:]
If you go
If you go your way and I go mine
Are we so
Are we so helpless against the time?
Baby, every doubt of history
Knows that we're in love with defeat
Are we ready to be swept off our feet
And start chasing every breaking wave?

Every sailor knows that the sea
Is a friend made enemy
Every shipwrecked soul knows what it is
To live without intimacy
I thought I heard the captain's voice
It's hard to listen while you preach
Like every broken wave on the shore
This is as far as I could reach

[Chorus]

The sea knows where all the rocks
Are drowning is an ocean
You know where my heart is
The same place that yours has been
We know that we fear the wind
And it's all we have before we begin
Before we begin

[Chorus]

This song is way better than this version of it. Google 'MTV Music awards 2014 Every Breaking Wave.' That's the superior version of this song. The production of this tune feels way too blah here. Bummer.

A bass line from a recent U2 song is the musical equivalent of Subway bread smell, announcing its mediocrity to all those unfortunate enough to be within range.

Sounds like Kansas.

Blenderized stadium rock...

Not for me

I love Beck, but i don't think his sound has changed much in the last 20-30 years.

This is a pretty good song...and yes, it does "sound like" U2.

U2 haters gonna hate - no matter what. They just make me laugh anymore.

Agreed.  I knew before I opened this thread that I would be hearing from the regular RP crybaby chorus.
I love RP, but there is way too much U2 on RP for me.
Sounds like Chris Martin (Coldplay)... and that's not a good thing.

I have no compassion for this song. I am SO against what U2 have become and that they now represent and how they used their 'influence' to force their music (via Apple) onto people who did not want it.

It is the thin end of the wedge.

What is the thick end? That only the powerful (government tools like U2) get to have their music distributed and played to the masses. It truly makes me shudder.

My hunch is that a labored, mediocre album from a spent band isn't going to lead to a Maoist lockdown of the global music industry.

Apple is a relentlessly profit-driven company obsessed with its image. It depends on the goodwill of its customers. It made a big PR mistake by pushing the album to iTunes customers without prior consent. It provided a software tool to remove the album from customers' drives and iTunes account. I doubt Tim Cook and co. will be a making a similar mistake for a long time.

Poacher, you should be a lot more worried about private companies gathering and selling data on your friends, surfing and purchasing habits etc. and government surveillance of individuals via data and phone networks. Like your GCHQ and our NSA:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/27/gchq-nsa-webcam-images-internet-yahoo

"Britain's surveillance agency GCHQ, with aid from the US National Security Agency, intercepted and stored the webcam images of millions of internet users not suspected of wrongdoing, secret documents reveal.

GCHQ files dating between 2008 and 2010 explicitly state that a surveillance program codenamed Optic Nerve collected still images of Yahoo webcam chats in bulk and saved them to agency databases, regardless of whether individual users were an intelligence target or not.

In one six-month period in 2008 alone, the agency collected webcam imagery – including substantial quantities of sexually explicit communications – from more than 1.8 million Yahoo user accounts globally."

Let me briefly go Stingray:  THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FUCKING OUTRAGEOUS AND INEXCUSABLE.

This practice is without exaggeration imagined in George Orwell's "1984" to monitor and prosecute citizens. The people involved in the design, implementation and maintenance of this program called Optic Nerve should lose their jobs and face civil and criminal prosecution.

No, it was clearly Bono's decision and initiative. Apple has allowed it, true, but the idea is from U2 and their over-dimensioned ego. It was a "gift" to show off and I really didn't appreciate it.

Bono's offer, or idea, perhaps.  Apple's decision.

Aren't you blaming the wrong entity?  It may have been U2's record, but it seems that iTunes (or Apple) is the one who "forced" it on you.

Ah Tsawwassen...old home town.
A once mighty band has fallen.
This is pretty weak stuff, isn't it?  It sounds like they're just going through the motions ...

Well personally, I didn't like having them forcing their album on me. I would have liked it better to receive a link with the choice to download it for free or leave it where it was. That's all. The lack of choice and taking over my devices was not necessarily something smart. It was ok in a sense because it was only music, but it could have been a hate speech from some extremist group, a sermon to invite us to convert to whichever faith, some porn pictures or movie.... .... I do not think their initiative should be encouraged, no matter their good intentions, there are simply too many ways to see that perverted.

I have kept the album for a few days in my iTunes though and then I deleted it as no, their music is definitely not to my taste. I've tried to listen to the whole album but there is something in their music that doesn't talk to me. It doesn't mean that I hate them, I guess you can say I just do not understand their music ?

Well done for playing the new U2 songs. This album is surprisingly good. It contains no bad songs from what I can tell. Many of them have me hooked.
It seems hip to dislike U2, some folks even got mad they were given the new album for free (I suppose it must be quite frustrating when you don't understand the meaning of 'delete').

 Agreed!

Boy, do I hope this miserable attempt at correct grammar and spelling was by design. If you're going to post such a negative comment regarding the music, at least try not to sound like an illiterate tool trying to be funny.

Your fantastic spelling really heightens your credibility on the subject.

There are easier methods to remove music from your phone however if I owned an Ifone, I would throw it away as well. Get a real iPhone

Yeah, and when you really pay attention to the lyrics (it's about Bono's mom who died when he was young) it's heart-rending. A lovely little tribute to her.

It's even less direct than that. It's an offer to download.

Not in my case.  It got downloaded to my phone without any offer or request.  It took me an hour to figure out how to delete it.  It wasn't possible to just remove it in the same manner that I remove other music from my phone.

Offering their album free of charge would have been fine.  Inflicting it on people without their consent is annoying, and making it difficult to delete is really objectionable.

Dead band walking ...
I don't mind Coldplay but I didn't think we needed another Coldplay in the form U2's newest album.

Listened to the album today...better than last two efforts.  More compelling, had me  interested in listening again.

Agreed. This song specifically isn't one of my favorites on the album, it sort of falls into the inoffensive rock category. I'm hoping 'The Troubles' and 'Cedarwood Road' make it into rotation.
For a lot of people it's turning into something like Tom Cruise, where people have made up their mind based on the persona vs the product.
Thought it was the Killers for a moment...
I keep hoping that time will be kind to U2. You know what I mean: With a little practice they could actually become a decent band. But no. Time has not been kind, and they have not improved. They remain a mediocre and pretentious band, with bland songs.
It sure is great to have a new U2 album out again, (they make great markers of big changes in Life!), and it really is quite a jammer! The lyrics in this song -- absolutely genius in a very Melville way -- describe the depths of the tidal pulls and pains I'm going through...
Have only listened to the album a few times since Tuesday but agree that it's much better than the last one. Early favorite is Iris. This one's good, too.
Rate any U2 song lower than any Iron & Wine song is a sin. Yes, I'm serious. 7.

On first listen yesterday I thought it was a better album than they've put out in a while, tho the first track, sort of about the Ramones I guess, seemed corny when they did it live.

I agree. Its definitely an improvement over the last couple of records.
i agree with the thought that this entire effort (album) is better than the last one or two... and upon subsequent listens, i'm enjoying it a little more. it's a bit of a paradigm shift to think 'suprise! new u2 record today'.. i also want to say it's a bit weird to hear bono scream / singing 'Raised By Wolves!', but that's another song...
This is NOT one of the better tracks from the album.  Seems like one of their "obligatory" pop tunes.  A bit soulless and contrived....and overall I really like the album!

I think the overall rating of 5 is a bit harsh.  Maybe it's still early to tell? just my opinion.
