On candy stripe legs, the spiderman comes
Softly through the shadow of the evening sun
Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead
Looking for the victim, shivering in bed
Searching out fear in the gathering gloom
And suddenly, a movement in the corner of the room
And there is nothing I can do, and I realize with fright
That the spiderman is having me for dinner tonight
Quietly he laughs, shaking his head
Creeps closer now, closer to the foot of the bed
And softer than shadow and quicker than flies
His arms are all around me and his tongue in my eyes
"Be still, be calm, be quiet now, my precious boy
Don't struggle like that or I will only love you more
For it's much too late to get away or turn on the light
The spiderman is having you for dinner tonight"
And I feel like I'm being eaten
By a thousand million shivering furry holes
And I know that in the morning I will wake up in the shivering cold
And the spiderman is always hungry
"Come into my parlour" said the spider to the fly
"I have something"
So many options from a truly iconic band, but we get this track time and again...it's really not that great. Sorta a middling effort...let's dive into the discography a little more shall we William? You have scads of Cure tracks listed in the RP library...
I agree they have plenty of excellent songs that should be played more, but this is my favorite Cure song. I wouldn't call it mediocre. My opinion of course.
Acording to the liner note of Galore (you were not so far from it):
"WHEN I WAS REALLY YOUNG I HAD A VERY STRANGE UNCLE (ALSO CALLED ROBERT!) WHO DELIGHTED IN FINDING AS MANY WAYS TO SCARE ME WITLESS AS HE COULD. ONE OF HIS FAVOURITES WAS TO WHISPER GRIM BEDSIDE STORIES INTO MY EAR, STORIES THAT OFTEN RELATED THE TWISTED DEEDS OF A HORRIBLE BOY-EATING CREATURE CALLED SIMPLY 'THE SPIDERMAN'. ONE NIGHT HE (MY UNCLE?) ACTUALLY WENT SO FAR AS TO CLIMB IN THROUGH MY BEDROOM WINDOW AFTER THE LIGHTS HAD BEEN PUT OUT... I SCREAMED FOR WHAT SEEMED LIKE DAYS. THE 'SPIDERMAN' STORIES ENDED THAT NIGHT, BUT MY FEAR OF THE DARK AND SPIDERS PERSISTED FOR QUITE SOME TIME... THE TPD VIDEO WON THE BPI 'VIDEO OF THE YEAR' AWARD... SO I SUPPOSE THANKYOU UNCLE ROBERT, WHEREVER YOU ARE NOW... "

Cheers!
Robert, stop yelling ffs....
Spiderman does NOT eat people, Robert! =p
Nor does he have candy stripe legs? different beast perhaps
I just saw them again recently. 4th time in 40 years. They are still incredible, and played for 3 hours, including 2 encores.
Long live the Cure. One of the 80s bands that shaped me.
You lucky duck. I wish I could see them live, too!
Long live the Cure. One of the 80s bands that shaped me.
This is one my least favourite of their "hits" but I completely adore Disintegration- it's part of my DNA at this point, and so are the Cure. And, anyway, the song sounds really good to my ears today.
Long live the Cure, and long live Robert Smith. They mean so so much to so many of us.
ASMR before ASMR was a thing. I for one certainly feel de-stressed after listening to this gem!
Well, that helps me understand some of The Cure's popularity!
Oh, so now we're cancelling the Cure because some man-bun wearing, cry-room seeking millennial is getting his panties in a bunch, associating Lullaby to pedo stuff...? Screw that and play it again, Bill!
Look - everyone sane hates pedos, but let's be real here people; pending that telling spooky stories was all he did, somebody should send Smith's creepy uncle a fruit basket for screwing up young Robert enough to later in life write this excellent track. I'll take your down-vote as secretly agreeing.
Just too much damn good music.
Oh well

Thanks for clearing that up M.
I like this song.We do. But in a deep, dark corner of my mind, I can't help wondering if this isn't the cure. Scary thought.
I'm sorry, i have to respond to that. Wonderful memories?? are you kidding? cuz i can understand if that was cynical. but just in case it wasn't:
This brilliant, brilliant song might have many possible meanings, but to me it speaks of incest and pedophilia. The spiderman is the father/unkle/whatever who comes to the little boy's bed at night and abuses him. just listen to the words and you'll see what i mean.
the thing is, it's so soothing, the music is so easy on the ears and the title suggests such good things (which is part of why it's so brilliant), and all that means that this song is played on radio, tv, commercials, events, etc, in so many positive circumstances, that people lose the context.
So next time you hear it, please don't think "oh, what a wonderful bed time lullaby", and please don't put your kids to bed with it, if you have any...

Is it OK if I'm sitting while listening to this one?

hempmandan is right... Robert Plant is covering the Cure! The world will never cease to amaze me... Now i just want to hear him cover Prince.

No. Gabriel I know that's you disguised as a listener you creepy stalker of my ears. Putting Gabriel into a Cure tune is like taking a dump in my coffee to get a new flavour.

Music is never an excuse to become intolerant after all Peter Gabriel makes me feel like skinning kittens

Yes, maybe soon you'll begin to understand Robert Smith's many ironic layers; a hyper straight man who gender-bended with his appearence and moody subject matter. But, then again he was merely following a well-worn path laid by so many obscure rockers who came before him. Barely heard of names like Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, and David Bowie, to name a few.

im wearing out my psd button
i spend more time lately hitting that than doing anything else online
i guess its time to move on
please, and thanks for stopping by
And this is quite possibly the most idiotic comment I have seen on RP.
WTF does that mean anyway?

It's not your fault.
How can anyone not 'get' The Cure? Disintegration is one of my all-time favorite albums!

Because it's a brilliant, fantastic, incredible song by an otherwise horribly boring band.

It's a good song, but I like A forest better. Also less boring imo.

I Am Kloot — Even the Stars
David Byrne & St. Vincent — I Am An Ape
and then The Cure
Bill you are having fun, and it's contagious (and today is vastly sunny) - swinging day !

That's funny... I never got people that don't get The Cure.
Ummm.
Because it's good?
Beats the hell out of greensleaves

Apparently, it is genuinely about a spider that was in his room an terrified him as a child...

I think they meant wonderful memories of this song and its melody, probably not the presumed implications of its lyrical content. Your interpretation of the lyrics (though astute) is not necessarily the definitive one - not unless you're Robert Smith.
Ditto, and I still think Bill must be "Bob here" that followed Weasel, voice is very similar. I tell anyone that misses WHFS to listen to RP.
And forget not Damian ... and BTW Cerphe has his own Facebook Page and does webradio 24/7 .. same old Cerphe, too! I got a card from Damian a few years back but have since lost touch with him. After the wreck he was really in bad shape for years.

This is exactly how I interpreted the lyrics to this song. Brilliant, sad, and very, very creepy.

Since the demise of the late, lamented WHFS, I have yet to find a better radio station than RP.

because I'm hearing a much much better band than I ever realized then.
Guess I was too busy at the time with other things on my mind.
I have since learned that "being too busy"... is overrated.
My thoughts exactly. For some reason they get a bad rep (probably due to the look/hair), but thanks to RP I can form an educated opinion, and that opinion is they were pretty damn good.
Me too.
Never in a million years thought I'd be admitting that.

Hey, smart guy, I have grandchildren; my first concert was The Beatles; and I have socks cooler than you. Since the demise of the late, lamented WHFS, I have yet to find a better radio station than RP.
Here, here!
For what it's worth, HFS is supposed to be making a return to the air via the web.

A NOT RMX cure song
XD
