Forget Santana's guitar playing for a moment. It's his groove that really makes the band. How can you not want to get up and shake it when listening to this? I went to a Santana concert in Grant Park where there were 300,000 people, black, white, and Latino, and each and every one was groovin to the music and lovin each other. FEEL THE LOVE!!!! Totally agree! For me, its not just his guitar playing that's so great about Santana, its the amazing percussion that's always accompanying him. Along with the rest of the band that bring so much energy and excitement.

Santana is probably the best guitar player at sounding the exact same in every single song he's ever played. It's a whole new level of consistency with this dude.

True. I saw Billy Joel on Colbert one time, and when asked why he stopped making albums, he said he stopped after what, 13 albums (I think) because he had said all he wanted to say. There was nothing left that he needed to say, why go on with more? Colbert brought up Elton John's 30-some albums, still going, and Joel jokingly said he's told EJ he should stop making records. lol
But for some musicians there's nothing else for them to do that they like or want to do. What's Carlos gonna do - retire and open a hot dog stand on a beach in Jamaica? Do variations on Vivaldi themes for guitar?

I was surprised when this came out how it sounds like it could have been from the same period as Luz, Amor y Vida...and I'm still amazed at how much it absolutely sizzles, and how Santana always seems able to tap into that eternal groove, now and forever, dig it.

So they do post, and they are as lame as the critics of Santana- these musicians have what's called a style. You could say all Blues Traveler songs "sound" the same, or Tom Petty, or My Morning Jacket. Its their sound.

I first saw Santana at the Carousel Ballroom (eventually rechristened "Fillmore West"--hadda love that Bill Graham) in San Francisco just as their first LP came out. Amazing band. After their set, the band calmly packed up and walked out the front door. Sez something about the very brief sense of utter equality (well, except for the Angels and the dope dealers) that still dominated the scene even after the Summer of Love (heh, heh). I happened across David Brown (bass) and said something foolish and inadequate. He smiled and hugged me.

Santana is an over-rated guitar player. His tone is is irritating and he does not play with nearly as much feeling as other guitarists. I saw him with Jeff Beck and Jeff Beck was by far the better player.

I agree that it sounds similar a lot although "the same is exaggerating I think. What I like about Santana is that he has an awesome band which gets to play a lot. (compared to other "great guitarists'" bands) I can think of a handful of guitar prodigies that basically just used their bands to provide a jam track for their soloing.

Wow...you may be a solid 23 years older than me, but grow up. I LOVE Latin jazz, a la Cubanissmo, Buena Vista Social Club, and the like. I like salsa music, in general. Santana? His guitar playing from song to song really DOES sound the same...I've heard lots of his music, many times.
Where in my rant, or any of these other anti-Santana comments, did somebody say, "I think Latin culture is inferior"? Even if somebody really did dislike all Latin music, that doesn't convey a bias against all Latin culture. I don't Thai food, but I'm still fascinated by their culture and history.
I think you have a bias towards anybody who doesn't like the music that you do, and I've seen that in some of your past posts.

Lack of appreciation is not equiavlent to cultural prejudice. I think a lot of classical music sounds the same. Does it? Probably not, but I haven't listened to enough of it to appreciate the differences. IMHO, I don't think it makes people ignorant.

I've been enjoying this whole album, especially this first track. By the way, I think the guy with the sunglasses on the album cover behind Carlos and to his right is my old friend from Aspen Adam Fells who now works for Santana management. (Adam is quite an accomplished guitar player himself) I haven't yet confirmed this with him, but it sure looks like him. Anyway, just a little Santana trivia for anyone who might be curious. Keep playing more of this album, I think it's really got wide appeal.

I think this is a nice jammy song that woulud do fine without Santana's contribution. It would be sorta like an old Fela Kuti grand jam. That's some darn fine shtuff! I commend Santana, however, for bringing this big-tropical-jam style stuff to a wider audience.
I got into an elevator in New Jersey with Santana. He stunk like he hadn't taken a shower in seven weeks. After 14 floors I couldn't hold my breath anymore. He told me to grow up. Stinky bastard.

i remember my dismay at a cd that i bought a while back, riddled with DRM. it made me quite angry to think that the record company was trying to deter me from making a copy of the cd to take with me to art class so that i wouldn't accidentally ruin the true album, or have it stolen from me, or leave it behind, or whatever. it's like the folks at universal records are ignoring fair use. now i have an ipod, so all i listen to are mp3s, so any time i do buy an album, i rip it. i'd be very upset to find that i couldn't rip something i legitimately bought to put onto my ipod.
i could rant for DAYS, seriously. heh.

This ARISTA CD is full of copy protection. I believe in "fair use". You can't rip the tunes to MP3 or put them on your IPOD. Go figure. No wonder SONY is having financial problems. Who cares about the music. I just got this copy and it's going back tomorrow for a refund. There is very small print on the back but no major warning that it is copy protected beyond belief.

Woo-hoo, yet another tune worthy of becoming an overplayed iPod commerical. At my count, I think that's two in as many days.
This does nothing for me at all, and I liked earlier Santana stuff.
